What We’re Asking For

Four requests to federal, provincial, territorial and municipal government, set out in our joint industry letter of 31 August 2026.

1. Mandate Canadian-made cable in publicly funded projects

Require Canadian-manufactured electrical cable in publicly funded infrastructure and clean-energy projects. Public money building public assets should support the domestic industry that can supply them.

2. Support tariff-affected manufacturers, and carry our case to government

Press, with Ottawa, for removal of the Section 338 tariffs. The 50% United States tariff on HTS 8544.49.30 applies to Canadian cable with no CUSMA exemption.

3. Remove Canada’s 50% tariffs on raw material inputs

Canada’s counter-tariffs fall on the copper and steel inputs our members buy to manufacture here. They raise the cost of Canadian production without protecting it. We ask that they be removed immediately for the following classifications:

  • 7408.11.10
  • 7408.11.20
  • 7408.11.30
  • 7408.19.00
  • 7217.10.00
  • 7217.30.00

4. Strengthen trade defence

Support faster, better-resourced trade-remedy action against dumped imports, so that unfairly priced product does not take the market while a case is still being heard.
